Chapter 19: Two Minutes
The Barrow Foundation gala filled the ballroom of a grand hotel, with four hundred guests and a screen the size of a garage door.
I wore the red wine dress.
Quinton wore a black tuxedo and his mother's name on a card in his pocket.
He gave his toast in ten minutes, plain and quiet, about the scholarship fund.
The room applauded, and I saw Odette dab her eye.
Dexter sat at table two with Paloma in white beside him.
She had dressed like a bride.
Nobody had missed that, and a few of the women were whispering behind their programs.
When the emcee said, "And now, a tribute to marriage," Dexter rose with a glass in his hand.
He walked to the stage with his shoulders back.
"Good evening, everyone."
He waited for the room to settle.
"I have spent the last week thinking about what holds a family together," he said. "And I have come to believe it is faithfulness."
A few people nodded.
"My wife Linnea," he said, and he found me with his eyes, "is the most faithful woman I know. She has been through a hard season. She has been unwell, and she needed a rest. I want her to know that when she is ready, I will be waiting."
Sympathy moved through the ballroom.
Several faces turned toward me, soft with pity.
It was the same face the customers in the bakery had worn, before they heard the rest.
"Excuse me," I said.
I said it in the voice I used at dinner parties, clear and pleasant.
Then I stood.
