Chapter 19: The Night

"Not here," Brandi said through my windshield, and her voice shook. "Please, Jo. Not in front of the school."

I rolled the window down two inches.

"Then where?" I asked.

"I have things you need. Everything he ever handed me. I can't keep it. He's going to put it all on me."

"On you," I said.

"My name's on the lease for the Tiffin lot. He had me co-sign in August. He said it was a formality."

She wiped her face with the back of her wrist and smeared it worse.

"Tomorrow," I said. "The dental office, eight o'clock. Bring the box."

"I'm sorry."

"I know you are," I said. "Eight."

She walked away across the lot with her shoes in her hand.

I did not feel generous, and I did not feel cruel.

I felt tired, and a little sorry for the girl, and not yet willing to say so.

My mother met me at her door on Sandusky Street, in her robe, and took my sleeping daughter out of my arms without a word.

My son stood behind her in the hall in his wrestling singlet, a blanket over his shoulders, still glowing.

"Mom," he said. "Did you see the takedown?"
