Chapter 15: Visiting Hours
The Milwaukee County Jail has a visiting room with twelve stools bolted to the floor.
Each stool faces a pane of scratched glass and a black phone on a steel cord.
Rosalyn had arranged the visit with a signature and a threat.
"Twenty minutes," she said at the door. "Don't promise him anything."
"I'm not going to."
"Good."
Soren stayed in the car, because a suspended detective in a jail lobby makes people nervous.
I sat on stool nine.
A woman beside me was talking to a man in orange about their daughter's braces.
The man across from her looked up at the television bolted in the corner.
It showed Carter, in handcuffs, on Soren's porch.
"That's the umbrella guy," he said.
Half the room laughed.
Then a guard brought Carter through the far door.
He wore orange and a pair of white slip-on shoes with no laces.
