Chapter 13: Ice Storm
The ice came in on the first Thursday of January.
It rained all night and froze on everything it touched.
At four in the morning the trees in Norma's yard were made of glass.
I heard van 22 before I saw it, chains on the tires, grinding up her driveway.
Mitch leaned over and pushed the passenger door open.
"Get in, Hoyle."
"I'm suspended."
"You're suspended from driving. I'm driving." He held up his grandfather's thermos. "You're a passenger. Passengers are allowed. It's in the handbook."
"It is not in the handbook."
"It's in my handbook. I wrote it last night."
I stood on the step in my parka and my pajama pants.
"Three hundred and fifty stops," he said. "In this. I need somebody to read me the shelf."
"You need somebody to tell you where the dogs are."
"I know where the dogs are. I need somebody to tell me where your dogs are."
I went upstairs and put on jeans.
We loaded at the depot with the dock lights flickering.
Half the drivers had called in.
The manager watched me climb into the passenger seat and didn't say a word.
