"Tell her yes," I said.

The plea was the third Tuesday in March.

Mitch and I ran our routes early and were downtown by one o'clock, still in brown.

The man from Columbus was already in the second row in his tweed cap.

The dentist from Cincinnati sat beside him in a suit this time.

The cement driver from Springfield took up a whole bench end by himself.

The man from Indianapolis had brought his canvas bag.

"Habit," he said.

Keith sat at the far end of the row, alone, in the suit that didn't fit.

Nobody sat next to him.

Then the doors opened again, and a man I'd never seen came in.

He was in his late thirties, in a work jacket with a Kentucky feed store logo on the pocket.

He stopped in the aisle and looked at all of us.

"Lexington," he said. "Sorry I never called you back, ma'am. I was ashamed."

The man from Columbus moved his hat off the bench to make room.

"We all were, son," he said. "Sit down."

So there were six of them in the row.
