Chapter 22: Sprinklers
Russ went to his truck first and came back with a dog.
Clay was big and yellow and about half grown into his paws.
He hit the grass of Fox Field.
"He's not allowed on the infield," Russ said. "I'm the one who decides that."
"Do you decide it often?"
"Never. Today I decided it."
We walked out through the gate by the home dugout, and I stopped.
I had been in that park five times in two weeks.
I had never stood on the field itself.
From the grass, the stands looked folded.
The infield was dark and perfect, raked in long even lines.
The outfield was cut in diagonal stripes, light and dark, so clean they looked ironed.
"How long does that take?" I said.
"Mowing? Two hours."
"The raking."
"Longer." He looked at the dirt. "You have to go slow, or you chase it."
He crouched and put his palm flat on the infield.
Clay shoved his nose under my hand and left it there.
I didn't know where to put my own face.
So I looked at the big board, where the hole from the sign still showed as a long green rectangle, and I laughed.
"You said you were saving the rest."
Russ stood up.
"I did."
"I'd like to hear it."
He looked at the dog, and at the dirt, and then at me.
I watched a man who hated talking decide to do it anyway.
"I'm not good at this," he said.
"Noted."
"I saw you in that tunnel with your fist shut and a face like somebody had turned off the lights. You drank the lemonade like it was an order. I thought, that's a person who is going to be brave about this whether she wants to or not."
He took a breath.
