Chapter 21: The Last Delmar
By 4:40 on Friday, two hundred people had come to watch a sign come down.
Dani had put it on the team's page that morning.
It read DELMAR EXITS LEFT-CENTER. FREE TO THE OUTFIELD RAIL. BRING A PHONE.
Dad and I stood at the rail with a view of the whole wall.
The sign was forty feet long, in green and white, and it had hung under the big board for eleven years.
A bucket lift rolled across the warning track, driven by a man in a green crew shirt.
Russ didn't wave.
He stopped the lift under the letter D, raised the bucket, and put a wrench to the first bolt.
A cheer went up from the rail.
"Say it with me," said a woman in a Foxes jersey. "One! Twelve!"
"Section one-twelve!" the rail chanted, delighted,.
I saw the back of a navy polo before I saw the face.
He had come down the first-base line to the rail, alone, in a shirt that said SPLASH ZONE SPAS over the heart.
His name tag said TODD, and under it, in smaller letters, ASK ME ABOUT FINANCING.
Todd stood at the rail four feet from me with his hands in his pockets.
For the first time in my life, he looked small.
"Beth."
"Todd."
"Can we talk somewhere else?"
"Say it here."
He glanced at the crowd.
"I'd rather not," he said.
"I'd rather you did. They've heard the rest."
A muscle moved in his jaw.
"My lawyer says the ring is marital property," he said. "It's worth twenty-four hundred dollars. You wore it during the marriage. I'm entitled to half of what it's worth, or to the ring itself, and I'd rather it be the ring."
"Your lawyer should read the page about gifts and inheritances," I said. "My mother's ring is mine. It's mine because she left it to me."
