Chapter 20: Director

The owner's office had a window onto the field, a rolltop desk, and a cardboard box with the lid off.

On Wednesday at 4:30, Dani sat across from him with her hands under her thighs.

"Sit, Mrs. Carroway," he said.

I sat.

He lifted a white T-shirt out of the box and held it up by the shoulders.

Across the chest, in red block letters, it said I NEEDED BOTH HANDS.

Under the words was a hot dog on each sleeve.

"I didn't approve a shirt," I said.

"You approved a clip. The shirt was mine." He unwrapped a peppermint. "The gift shop has sold three thousand one hundred since Saturday."

Dani made a small, strangled noise.

"I didn't ask for money," I said.

"I know. That's why I'm asking you where it goes."

I looked at the shirt.

I thought about my front office.

We have a drawer under the counter, the second one down.

It holds clean socks, granola bars, sweatpants in three sizes, and a bag of winter gloves.

"The school," I said. "The front office drawer. For the kids who come in without breakfast."

The owner wrote on a pad.

He looked at me over his glasses for a long moment.

"I'll fill it," he said, "and I'll keep filling it."

He tore the sheet off and turned to Dani.

"Now. Ms. Judd."

Her shoulders went up around her ears.

"The operations director gave me his notice Monday. He's taking a job in Tulsa."

"Where kiss cams are optional," Dani said, faintly.

"I'm told so." He put the peppermint in his mouth. "I've watched this park run nine seasons on your boards. I'd like a director who is right more often than I am."

"Sir..."

"The job is yours if you want it. You'd run the whole show, game and screen. You'd report to me."
