Chapter 12: Mrs. Rudd
Marcy drove, because I couldn't hold the folder and a steering wheel at the same time.
Harlow was two hours inland on a two-lane highway through wet pine woods.
"What's the plan?" Marcy said around the first hour.
"I don't have one. I'm going to sit down and let him talk."
"You're going to sit next to a stranger and not say who you are."
"Yes."
"Jo, I love you. I've loved you for ten years. You have the worst luck."
"Thank you."
"I'm just saying, if this is a normal affair I'll be thrilled, because I understand a normal affair. I don't understand a woman who sleeps with one man and lists another as her husband."
"Then let's find out."
Harlow Women's Health was a low brick building at the end of a main street with one traffic light.
We got there at ten to nine.
The waiting room had a fish tank, a rack of parenting magazines and six plastic chairs.
Five of the chairs were empty.
In the sixth sat a man in a canvas work jacket with a manila folder on his knee.
He was tall and tired, in his early thirties, with sawdust on his boots and a ring on his left hand.
He looked up and nodded politely as we came in.
Marcy took the chair by the door and pretended to read a magazine upside down.
I sat down beside him.
"Good morning."
"Morning." He smiled. "Cold out there, huh?"
"It's getting colder."
"My wife says that every year. First frost in October, she says, and then she buys more soup." He laughed at himself. "You waiting for a friend?"
