Chapter 22: My Own Name
On Monday morning Marcy dumped a printout on the office table and let it slide.
It ran to forty pages, double-sided.
"Emails," she said. "Since Thursday. Nine thousand and some."
"From who?"
"Women. They want to know when you'll teach again." She sat down hard. "Also four men, and one dog's owner who doesn't understand what a marriage course is."
"Marcy."
"I'm only reporting."
The front door chimed downstairs.
Two women were coming up the stairs of my small rented office, one of them silver-haired with a tote bag of binders.
"Dr. Wexford," she said. "I hope we're not early."
"You're always early."
"We have a petition."
The woman in the green coat from the hotel bar was behind her.
She held up a clipboard with a column of signatures, and more pages stuck out from under her arm.
"Two hundred and eleven names," she said. "From the ballroom, from the bar, from the bakery. We want the course."
"I'm not sure what I'd be teaching."
"The truth," said the green coat. "You did it once for free, and it was the best thing I've ever sat through."
I looked at the clipboard.
"The course I wrote has a line in it," I said. "Stay, work on it, there is always something left to save."
"It's in the book."
"It's in the book, and it's wrong."
The silver-haired woman put her tote bag on the table.
"Wrong how?"
"For some of you, it's the worst thing I could have said." I picked up a marker. "A man told me that on a roof last Thursday, and I told him he was unfair. He wasn't."
