I didn't see him again for seventeen days.
Then, the week after Christmas, I rode a bus across a narrow bridge onto Rikers Island.
Aaron drove me as far as the visitor lot in Queens. He wasn't allowed any further.
"I'll be right here," he said.
"You're always right here."
"It's a good spot. I've grown attached to it."
The visiting room smelled like floor wax and vending machine coffee.
Plastic tables bolted to the floor. Plastic chairs bolted to the tables.
A guard pointed me to number nine.
They brought Silvio in through a steel door in a gray jumpsuit and canvas shoes.
No watch. No bracelet. No nice tie.
His beard had grown out ragged. Someone had cut his hair short, badly.
He sat down across from me and put his hands flat on the table, the way the rules said.
He looked at my coat first. The curve under it was bigger now.
"You came," he said.
"I came to say one thing."
