Chapter 11: Bring Your Key

Brennan stood in the doorway holding his bag of fries and tried three expressions in a row.

The first was surprise. The second was hurt.

The third was the smile.

"Emmy," he said, softly. "I'm so glad you came. I've been wanting to talk to you for days."

I did not stand up.

"You've been sleeping in your car," I said.

"It's only until things calm down."

"Where's the forty-one thousand?"

His eyes flickered. "That's a joint account, babe. That's our money."

"It was in the account for our daughter."

"I put it somewhere safe."

"Where?"

He didn't answer. I saw him glance at the phone on my knee, and the little red dot on its face.

He set the bag down.

"Are you recording this?"

"Yes."

He took a step toward me, and Bridget got to her feet in one movement.

She was small, and her eyes were red, but she stood between us with her arms out.

"Don't," she said.

"Bridge. Move."

"Don't touch her phone."

Brennan looked at her, and I watched him decide that she was an obstacle.

"Fine," he said. "Fine. You want it on tape? Let's put it on tape."

His voice rose, and his shoulders came up. This was the other Brennan, the one I had seen twice in three years and explained away both times.

"You were going to put me on the deed, Emmy. You said you would. You said it at Thanksgiving. Then your grandmother got in your ear and you went to the bank behind my back and moved everything."

"You knew about the bank?"

"I'm not stupid. I checked the account every week. When I saw it go I knew exactly what you were doing."
