Chapter 9: The Walk-In
I went back to the cold room on a Thursday night in the second week of March, and I took the key from his coat myself.
The warehouse was dark and empty.
He had told Eleni's driver he was taking the oil order.
Eleni's driver had believed him, because Nikos Pappas had never lied to anyone in that house.
I locked the steel door behind us.
The bulb in its cage swung once and steadied.
"Take off your coat," I said.
He took it off and hung it on a hook by the door.
In his shirtsleeves in the cold he looked like what he was, a big, scarred, careful man who had never been given anything.
"Now come here."
He came.
I stood with my back against the steel door and my hands behind me on the handle.
He stopped a foot away, and I could feel the heat coming off him in the cold air.
"I'm carrying your child," I said.
"I know," he said.
"I've told no one.
"I'm telling you.
"Tonight I am not going to talk about it, and neither are you.
"Tonight there's only this."
"Yes," he said.
"Yes to what?" I asked.
"Whatever you tell me."
I looked at him for a long time.
The sweater under my coat was wool and the room was bitter, and my nipples were hard with it.
"Kiss me," I said.
He put one hand on the door beside my head and bent and kissed me.
It was slow.
It was the first kiss he had ever given me where I had not told him how.
His mouth was warm and soft and sure, and he tasted of the coffee he drank black.
