Kali's POV
I did not know how late I was until I counted, and it was three weeks.
It was the first week of March, and the snow had gone gray along the curbs of Halsted Street.
I stood at the pharmacy counter between the cough syrup and the birthday cards, holding a small box with both hands.
Aris waited at the corner with his collar up, pretending to read a bus schedule.
I had told him it was cold medicine.
He had looked at me for a long moment, and then he had said, "I'll be at the corner."
The woman at the register did not look up from the screen.
She rang it through and put it in a paper bag.
The bathroom in the back of the taverna had a cracked mirror and a window painted shut.
I locked the door and did what the leaflet said, and then I sat on the edge of the tub and put the stick face down on the sink.
My mother had sat on this tub when she was carrying Aris.
