Chapter 7: The Back Seat

Nikos's POV

She got into the back of the Lincoln without being asked.

The garage under the Park Ridge house was dark and cold, and the only light came from one bulb over the service door.

It was past midnight.

I had been sitting behind the wheel for an hour with the engine off.

It was the one place in that house where nobody came to find me.

The rear door opened and shut, and her scent came into the car, flour and vanilla and cold air.

"Kali," I said.

"Get out of the front seat."

I turned.

She sat in the middle of the back seat in a long coat, with her hair down.

In the dim light her eyes were black and steady.

"Stavros told me never to speak of it," I said.

"I've refused him three times.

"I told him to find another driver for you."

"And he said no," she said.

"He said no," I said.

"Then stop talking and get in the back," she said.

I got out of the front.

I climbed in beside her on the other side and shut the door, and the dome light faded.

I am a big man, and the Lincoln is a big car, and it was suddenly very small.

She turned to face me on the leather.

"Hands," she said.

I put them flat on my own thighs.

"Good."

She unbuttoned her coat.

She wore nothing under it but a black slip and her skin, and I looked and could not stop.
