Chapter 20: Praise

Tae-san came back from the old man's rooms a little after the second watch.

Ji-han had not moved from the bed.

He had tried lying down and sitting up and standing at the window.

He had ended up folding and unfolding the white ribbon until it was soft as cloth.

Tae-san closed the door and leaned his back against it.

His face was bare and strange.

"Well?" Ji-han said.

"He knew."

"Since when?"

"The first week. Jin Hyeok-ryeong wrote to him from the pass, the night before."

"He said, if I fall, the boy will put on my veil, look after him." Tae-san laughed, short and soft.

"He said it as if I were a stray dog."

"Did he say what he'd do tomorrow?"

"He said nothing about tomorrow. He gave me noodles."

"Noodles."

"He'd made them himself. They were terrible." Tae-san's voice shook.

"He sat and watched me eat the whole bowl. He asked me if I was sleeping. Nobody asks that."

He slid down the door and sat on the floor with his knees up.

Ji-han crossed the room and knelt in front of him.

"Tae-san."

"I think I'm going to be sick."

"You are not."

"I might be."

Ji-han took his face in his hands.

"Tomorrow I'll be dead, or I'll be nobody," Tae-san said. "And I find I'd like very much, tonight, to be someone."

"You are someone."

"You said you would keep saying it." Tae-san's eyes were wet, and he held them wide open.

"I want all of it, Ji-han. Everything you'd say if you had the time."
