Max's POV
On Friday at nine I walked into my own office for the first time in eleven days, and the receptionist stood up.
"Mr. Gresham. Welcome back," she said.
"Thank you. Is Corliss here?"
"She's cleaning out her desk, sir," she said. "She said you'd ask."
Corliss was kneeling beside the bottom drawer with a cardboard box on the carpet.
She had a stapler, a stack of green ledgers, and a framed photograph of a dog.
"I'm not accepting your resignation," I said.
"You don't have a say, Boss."
"I have a say. I'm the one who signs the check."
She sat back on her heels and looked at me.
"You look terrible," she said.
"I look like a man who has been doing his wife's job for twenty-six days," I said.
"It suits you."
"It doesn't."
I took the folded papers out of my inside pocket.
They were soft at the creases from carrying.
Petition for divorce. Joint. Uncontested.
Aubrey's signature on the last page, in her small, steady hand.
"Mother reads everything personal I sign," I said. "She has since Father died. I thought it was her way of helping."
