Chapter 17: The Doctor's Tea
I read the card twice and went upstairs to find my phone.
Patrick was at a job site until five.
I had one day, one house, and a woman who wanted to look at my nerves.
I opened the voice recorder, and I tested it, and I slid the phone into the pocket of my grey cardigan.
Beatrix had chosen the blue wool dress under it.
At four the drawing room was laid for tea, with the good china, the silver pot and a plate of tiny sandwiches.
The doctor sat in the wing chair with a black leather bag at his feet.
Beatrix sat across from him, very upright.
I sat on the sofa between them.
"Edith," the doctor said warmly. "How are you finding married life?"
"Busy," I said.
"And sleeping?"
"I sleep fine."
The doctor spread his hands. "Nurse Habersham," he said, with a smile at Beatrix, "is a professional woman. Forgive me. Mrs. Habersham. I know you'll understand when I ask a few routine questions."
