Chapter 14: The Cover Story

Shanna looked at Waylon, and then at me, and her face did not change at all.

I had seen her the night before, alone in a car, breathing slowly at the wheel. I had not known she could do this.

"Babe," Waylon said, and his voice came out too high. "You're early. This is Jo. She's working the desk."

"Hi, Jo," Shanna said. "I've seen you around."

"Hi," I said.

"She's family," Waylon went on. "Sort of. She's Samantha's cousin. From Ohio."

The room went very quiet.

I looked at him, and he looked at the wall behind my head.

It was a good lie, and I hated that it was good.

It explained my face, the name, the way I had been staring at him, and the fact that he had walked into the lodge and said hello to a woman he supposedly did not know.

"Samantha's cousin," Shanna said slowly.

"I didn't recognize her at first. Neither would you. They look so alike it's honestly eerie."

"It really is," Shanna said.

She set the paper bag on the counter. Then she reached up and took the locket out from under the collar of her shirt.

She opened it with her thumbnail and held it next to my face.

"Oh my God," she said. "It's uncanny. You have her chin."

I could not tell whether she was enjoying this.

"I'm so sorry for your loss," she said to me, and she put her hand over mine on the desk. Her fingers were steady. "He still can't talk about her."
