Chapter 14: The Bunk

The bunk room lay at the far end of the basement, behind a steel door that Eugene had painted the color of a mailbox.

It held two steel cots pushed together, a blanket the army would have been proud of, and a lamp with a cloth shade.

Ingrid sat on the edge of the cots with her shoes off and a legal pad on her knee.

It was ten at night, and she had been writing for three hours.

"Four hundred shareholders will be in that room on Wednesday," she said. "Torsten votes the trustee block, which is a third."

"The aunts and cousins hold a third between them."

"The rest is pension funds and employees, and they follow whoever looks like they'll win."

Cavan sat on the other cot, taking off his boots.

"Which aunt cares most about her grandchildren's money?"

"All of them. None of them will say it to his face."

"Then we don't ask them to say it to his face," he said. "We ask them to say it to ours."

Ingrid looked up from the pad.

"You do this a lot," she said. "Sit across from a frightened person and make a plan seem small."

"It is small. It's one door at a time."

"And Anders?"

"Anders is afraid of his father. He just doesn't know it yet."

She put the pad on the floor.

Posy was at Eugene's house, ten blocks away, asleep with the goldfish bowl on the nightstand.

Eugene's sister dozed in a chair in the hall outside her door.

Eugene had checked the locks twice and had given Cavan a look that said go.
