"He's here," I said. "You're on speaker."

I was naked from the waist up, with a rental car's air vent blowing on my breasts.

I did not reach for my dress.

I wanted to hear her say it.

"Oh," Shea said. "Okay. Hi, Brennan."

Brennan sat with his shorts still undone and his eyes closed.

"Shea," he said.

"I just want to talk. Both of you. I've been up all night. I know I'm the villain, and I know how it looks."

"How does it look?" I said.

She took a shaky breath, the one she had always taken before she cried.

I used to hold her hand when she did it.

"It looks awful," Shea said. "But it wasn't like that. I didn't plan to hurt you. It just happened, Kir. You can't pick who you fall for."

"Todd and I were standing at the altar when you kissed him."

"I know," Shea said.

"I paid for your seat on the plane."

"I was going to pay you back." Her voice cracked on the last word. "I swear I was. Todd said he'd handle it."
