My Mate Broke Our Bond, So the Northern Alpha Claimed Me novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: Her Terms

Sorcha stepped back out of his reach.

"I don't know you," she said. "I'm not anyone's Luna."

The courtyard heard every word.

"You are an unclaimed wolf," Brogan Greaves said. "Under the old law, any Alpha may offer for you. You may refuse."

"I waited for the bond to break because I cannot touch a mated wolf. It is broken. So I am offering."

Waited.

He had stood outside the gate while she stood in that ring and tore herself in half.

Sorcha filed that away and kept her face still.

"Your offer is void," the Alpha of Ironwood said. He had found his voice again. "I closed every border to this girl. Any Alpha who claims her will answer to my pack."

Brogan turned his head slowly.

"Your decree binds Ironwood wolves, Alpha. She is no longer one."

"She was raised on my land."

"And now she is standing on it, severed, with a mark you let them cut into her." The gold in his eyes did not fade. "You may call your war. I walked past your sentries without drawing a blade."

The Alpha's mouth thinned.

A murmur ran through the wolves behind him, and for the first time Sorcha heard fear in it.

Nobody wanted war with the Black Alpha.

Sorcha looked at the crowd of faces she had known all her life.

Nobody had spoken for her in the hall. Nobody was speaking now.

"Why me?" she asked.

Brogan looked at her for a long moment.

"Not here."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the only one I will give tonight."

Her father stepped out of the front row.

"Sorcha, you do not have to go with a stranger. We can leave tonight, you and your mother and me. We will find a place."
