Chapter 7: Winnie's Exile

The hall was half empty at eight in the morning, and Dane had chosen it that way.

He sat in the Alpha's chair with the pack ledger open on the table in front of him.

Winnie stood in the middle of the floor in her yellow rain jacket, with her chin out and her hands in fists.

I had told her on the drive down not to say a word until I said so.

She was saying plenty with her face.

Caius and I stood against the side wall.

The envoy sat in a chair by the door with his case on his knees and wrote nothing down.

"Winnie Cobb," Dane said, reading from the page. "You are charged with disrespect to the Acting Alpha, with inciting the pack against its leadership, and with keeping a wager that was not yours to win."

"I won it fair," Winnie said. "In the chat. In writing."

"The charge stands." He did not look at me. "The sentence is loss of standing. Your clinic post is ended. Your mother's cottage on pack land is forfeit by the end of the month."

Winnie's face went grey.

"That's my mother's house."

"It's pack land."

"She's sixty-eight."

"The ledger says what it says," Dane said, and turned the page.

I felt Caius move before I saw it.

He was not beside me any more.

He was three strides across the floor, and his hands had changed at the ends, the fingers drawn long and dark and tipped with claws.

His voice came out in a growl I could feel through my teeth.

"You will not do that in front of me."

The whole hall stood up.

Dane's face lost its colour all at once, and for the first time since I had known him he looked afraid.
