Chapter 22: The Thaw

On the first of April I walked into the kitchen of the pack house and took the calendar down off its nail.

It was the one from the feed store, with the moose on it.

The first of April had a red circle around it, and the days before it carried a small black cross each, in a square hand.

The crosses had stopped on the sixth of January.

Nobody had dared to take the calendar down, and nobody had dared to draw on it.

The cook stood at the stove with a wooden spoon and watched me.

"He's at his sister's in Trois-Rivieres," she said. "He sent a letter to Memere. She put it in the stove."

"Good," I said.

"He asked after his mother. That was all."

I carried the calendar into the great hall.

The long table was set for the quarterly accounts, and every chair was full.

Sixty wolves sat with their eyes on me, and the three old men stood at the foot with their hats in their hands.

I did not go to the foot.

I walked up the whole length of the table.
