Pietro told me about the fireworks until the biscotti ran out.
He named the barge on the river and the cousin who had been banned from the last display.
He gave me the wind limit over Elmwood Park and the price of a gold willow.
Carlo checked the mantel clock after every rocket.
Nobody could stop him, because Pietro was only answering a question.
"And then the finale," Pietro said, "is twelve minutes long."
"Pietro," Carlo said. "I wouldn't dream of interrupting."
"Papa, please do," Pietro said, and then he stopped.
I stood up and brushed the crumbs off my lap onto the Bellandi rug.
"I'd hate to keep you from your morning," I said.
Carlo's shoulders came down an inch.
I took the envelope home with me, and I told nobody about the study.
On Tuesday night the parish held its spaghetti dinner, and I had a plan for it.
I would ask Domenico for nothing and offer him everything.
Carlo had said nobody liked his son, and I wanted to know if Carlo was right.
