Rosa's POV
The priest said no to my focaccia.
"No, thank you," he said, and pushed the foil back across his desk with one finger.
Nobody had refused food in front of me since I was in a high chair.
It was Sunday afternoon in the parish office, with a clock on each wall and a radiator that ticked.
The priest was the same man who had held the raffle microphone on Tuesday, and he was seventy-four.
He had buried my father and married half of Harlem Avenue.
"Have you eaten?" Domenico asked him, very carefully.
"I have eaten," the priest said. "I've also had a coffee, a roll, and a kindness from a widow."
"I'm full of offers. In this room, I take none."
"It's no trouble," I said.
"It is a great deal of trouble," the priest said. "That's why the answer is no."
Domenico sat very still beside me, watching the priest's hands.
"I have married six hundred couples from your families," the priest said.
