Genevieve went on television at seven the next morning.
We watched it in the Tiburon kitchen, six brothers and me in a row at the island with the portable set propped against the fruit bowl.
She sat on a pale couch across from a host with a gleaming smile.
She wore her good pearls again, her own, and a soft gray cardigan, and she held a tissue she had not needed yet.
"I raised her as my own," Genevieve said.
"I would never turn a child out."
She dabbed at a dry eye.
"Lucy was a sensitive girl, always a little lost, always longing to belong somewhere."
"I'm afraid that when she found out she wasn't ours, she grasped at the first family that would have her."
"Do you think the Gallivans are taking advantage?" the host asked, leaning in.
"I think they are grieving, and grief makes people hopeful," Genevieve said.
"I only wish somebody had asked me first."
"She is good," the second brother said, almost to himself.
"Turn it off," Brendan said.
"No," I said.
"I want to see how she ends it."
