Chapter 7: The Stairs

I opened my door, and the landing was full of Tollefsons.

Kasper stood at the top of the stairs in a gray undershirt and flannel pants.

Eero had stopped halfway down the hall, holding a glass of water he clearly did not need.

Soren leaned on the banister in a silk robe, perfectly awake.

All three had come for the same reason, and each had thought he was the only one.

They stared at each other.

"Oh, for God's sake," Soren said. "Who invited you?"

"Nobody invited anybody," I said. "One at a time. Kasper first."

I sat down on the top stair with my arms around my knees.

The other two went back to their doors with the worst grace I have ever seen.

Kasper stood over me.

"I'd like his last name," he said. "I'd like to know where he lives. I won't do anything. I want to know."

"No."

"His plates, then."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"Kasper."

"You're alone out here, and you don't know us," he said, rough. "I'm trying to look after you."

"Then look after me by going to bed."

He held on a second longer.

Then he nodded and went down the hall, shoulders stiff, and I heard his door shut.

Eero came next, with his glass.

"I only want to ask one thing," he said. "Is he healthy? Does he drink? It's a quick question, and I won't repeat the answer."
