Chapter 21: Nobody Believes the Sidekick
The girl in the pastel sweater put the notebook on the dean's table and stepped back from it.
"I'm sorry," she said to me. "I carried your invitation. I didn't know what it was for."
My hands were not steady as I opened the cover.
It was my handwriting on every page.
I turned to page thirty-one.
A brown ring sat on it, soft and ragged, with the paper dried into ripples around the edge.
Page thirty-two had the same ring in reverse.
"There," I said, and I put it down beside Keeley's neat copy.
Nobody needed to say anything.
The dean looked at both books for a long moment.
Then she folded her hands and looked at Keeley.
"Ms. Chauncy, as of this moment you are expelled from Brightwater College," she said. "The matter of the password goes to campus police this afternoon. You will leave the building."
"You can't expel me over a notebook," Keeley said.
"I am expelling you for the notebook, the false post, the forged receipt, the forged email and the theft." The dean's voice stayed level. "I will also be writing to Southern University."
Keeley stood in the middle of the carpet.
For the first time, she looked at nobody and had nothing to say.
She went out with her chin up and her hands empty.
I followed to the top of the steps, because I wanted to see the end.
The quad was full.
News travels fast in a college of four thousand, and two hundred people stood on the grass with their phones in their hands.
A speaker clicked on somewhere.
It was Dani's recording, played from the third-floor library window, and the voice rolled out over the whole quad.
