Chapter 5: Pressed Flat

I told Dani what Micah said, and she put down the stapler she was holding.

"Twelve-forty," she said.

"What?"

"Every day at twelve-forty, Ellis comes through the library doors and goes straight up the stairs to the third floor," she said. "I thought he was finally studying. I was going to tell you, and then I thought, no, let her have this."

"He has my notebook at twelve-forty," I said.

"Then somebody's got a copier up there that he visits every single day."

We sat at the desk, side by side, under the buzzing light.

The third floor had one copier and four study carrels, and the carrels belonged to whoever got there first.

"I can walk up there tomorrow," I said.

"You can," Dani said. "Or you can let me do it, and be the loud one."

"I want to see his face myself."

"Fine. But I'm carrying a stapler."

At nine that night someone knocked on our dorm door.

Dani looked at me, and I looked at the peephole.

It was Ellis.

He stood in the hallway with his leather jacket zipped to the chin, holding a manila folder against his chest.

I opened the door, and Dani appeared at my shoulder with her arms folded.

"I'm not asking for anything," he said at once.

"Good."

"I mean it." He held out the folder. "These are mine."

I took it.
