Chapter 22: Harbor Day

The festival stage had been built at the end of the harbor dock, and it was crowded.

The whole of Port Harlan stood on the boards in front of it, in slickers and hats, with kids on shoulders.

Boats lay three deep along the pier, their decks full of people who had cleared a Saturday for this.

At the far end, where the stage should have been, stood a flatbed truck.

A crane stood on the truck's bed.

Hanging from its hook, swaying slightly, was a steel tank with a padded lid.

Brent stood on the flatbed in a pressed blue suit, with a microphone in his hand and a smile on his face.

Eight men in aquarium jackets stood below him with their arms folded.

The board's three members sat in folding chairs near the front, and the deputy leaned against a piling with his thumbs in his belt.

I stood in the middle of the crowd with Velun's hand in mine.

Maya was on my other side, and Gus a step behind.

"Good morning, Port Harlan!" Brent said.

His voice boomed off the water.

"Some of you have heard rumors this week. I'm here to speak to them honestly."

Nobody answered.

"Sorcha MacAuliffe is a troubled young woman," he said, in his soft voice.

"I cared for her for three years, and I care for her now."

"But she has been hiding a dangerous animal on her property."
