Chapter 24: My Orders Changed on the Wedding Night
The young woman in white gave Ja-heon a week and a lecture.
"Seven days," she said at the unfinished gate of Dongjin, with a plane in one hand and his chisel in the other.
"Not eight.
"The beams will be waiting."
He thanked her, and she scowled, and she did not tell him to go away.
That was how he understood that he was going to be allowed to live.
Red Plum Valley was in bloom again.
The huts had been rebuilt on new stilts, taller than the old ones, and the long house had a real tile roof.
Grain sacks stood in the dry store with no black square on them.
Forty children ran loose through the plum rows, and none of their wrists were sticks anymore.
The oldest plum tree grew at the top of the valley beside the Lord's door.
Under it was a new mound of earth with a plain board.
Ja-heon stood at the board for a long moment before the ceremony.
He had brought the two ends of the cut red thread.
He tied them around the lowest branch above the board, in a knot nobody had taught him, and let them hang.
"I am not coming back to the valley to live," he told the board.
"But I will come every spring."
The branch rustled.
They married the next day, in the open, among the trees.
There was no Hall, and there were no six hundred guests in sect colors.
There was Sun-ok in her jade-green sash.
There was Hong, who had come with a hammer on his belt and a new ugly haircut.
Four hundred people from the valley and the Pavilion stood in a ring in the mud, in patched coats and white robes.
Seon-woo stood under the tree in plain white, with the crane pin in his hair.
