Chapter 11: Clawfoot

The water was hot enough to turn my skin pink.

I sat in it with my back against Cade's chest and my head on his shoulder.

The claw-foot tub took up half of his bathroom.

It was the only fine thing in the old Hartmann house, long and deep and white, and it held him with room to spare.

A single candle burned on the sink.

We had not said a word since the dance.

He had driven us home with both hands on the wheel.

I had watched the side of his face in the dashboard glow, and I knew he was thinking about his father.

"You can sleep in the other room tonight," Cade said now, quietly. "If you want. You've had a hard night."

I turned my head and looked up at him.

"Your house, your rule?" I said. "I believe the rule was nothing happens unless I start it."

He looked down at me.

"I'm starting it," I said.

I turned in the water.

I rose to my knees between his thighs, with the bathwater running off my shoulders, and put my hands on his face.

I kissed him slowly this time.

There was no anger left in it.

His mouth opened under mine, warm and soft, and his hands came up out of the water and slid down my back.

They spread across it, wet and enormous, and he held me against his chest.

"I'm sorry about the coat room," I said into his mouth.

"Don't be," he said.

"I hit you," I said.

"You hit me twice, and I'd have let you do it again."

"I was angry at the wrong man."

"You might not have been," Cade said.

Then he stopped talking, because I had reached under the water and wrapped my hand around him.

He was already hard.

I stroked him slowly, up and down, with the water pulling against my wrist.

His head fell back against the rim of the tub.

"Tilly," he said.

"Be quiet. I want to do this."

I straddled his lap, facing him, and the water rose around us and sloshed over the side onto the tile.

I held him at my entrance and lowered myself down an inch at a time.
