Chapter 13: Mine

Cade's POV

I did not look in the mirror as we pulled out of the ranch yard.

I knew what was in it, a lit kitchen window and an old man standing in the door.

Tilly sat against the passenger door with her fist shut around the brass key.

She had not said a word since the porch steps.

The pecan pie was still on my father's table, uncut.

"You can say it," I said at the cattle guard.

"Say what?"

"That you want to go home. Your own bed, your own roof. I'll drive you up to the big house gate."

She turned her head.

In the dash light her gray eyes were calm.

"Drive," she said.

"Tilly."

"Drive, Cade."

I drove.

I had worked it out on the porch while she stood holding that key.

A Wiedenfeld goes back to her own kind in the end.

She had lived in a foreman's son's house for two months and called it a rebellion.

Now the foreman had sat at his own table and shown her what the help was capable of.

I did not blame her for what came next.

I only wanted to be the one who drove her to the gate.

Then I would not have to watch her go with someone else.

At the farmhouse I cut the engine and sat with my hands on the wheel.

She got out, came around the hood, and opened my door.

"Out," she said.

I got out.

She took hold of my belt buckle with one hand and walked backward across the yard, towing me.

The porch light was off.

She did not need it.

She put her back to the front door, pulled my head down by the collar, and kissed me.

It was a hard, deep, claiming kiss, and it tasted of pecans and cold air.

I put my hands on the door on either side of her head and held myself off her.

"You're thinking," she said against my mouth.

"I am."

"Stop it."

"My father..." I said.
