Chapter 14: Open Hall

By noon the whole pack was in the great hall.

Two hundred and fifty wolves filled the long room, shoulder to shoulder, with children on the stairs and old men on the window ledges.

Veikko stood at the head of the table, reading the Call aloud.

His voice was steady until he reached the clause that every Alpha must stand before the three packs at the Moot, and shift.

Then he put the parchment down.

"There's something this pack ought to hear before Midwinter," he said. "I've held my tongue for three years out of loyalty. I can't do it anymore."

Eskil sat in the Alpha's chair with his hands on the arms.

I stood behind him with my back to the wall and Leena at my elbow, gripping my sleeve.

"Your Alpha," Veikko said, "has not shifted since his father died."

A murmur went through the hall.

"I kept track. Every full moon, thirty-six of them. He goes to the border and he doesn't run. Not once. I'll tell you why I think..."

"True," Eskil said.

Veikko stopped.

Eskil stood up.

He did it slowly, and the whole hall watched him, and I saw his hands were not shaking at all.
