Chapter 20: The Moot Stone

The Moot Stone stood in the middle of a snow meadow, a slab of gray granite as long as a truck.

Behind it the birches ran down to the frozen river.

Ironwood stood on the east side, two hundred wolves in their winter coats.

Tamarack filled the west, with Reino's fur collar at the front of it.

A third pack had come from the south shore.

Its Alpha was a heavy old woman with a hard face, and she sat on the Stone's long bench.

On the right hand of the Stone stood a smaller bench, worn smooth.

Nobody had sat on it in a hundred years.

Six Tamarack wolves stood around it with their arms folded.

I had walked the last mile with Eskil, hand in hand, with Aino's cane tapping behind us.

I had the two silver caps in the inside pocket of my coat.

Aino and I had taken them out of her bread oven at four that morning.

They were black with ash, and we had washed them in the kitchen sink.

They were colder than any metal I had ever held.

I could feel them against my ribs now, through the wool.

Reino rose to open the Moot.

He raised both hands, and the meadow went quiet.

"We meet by the old law," he said, in that warm voice that fills a hall. "Three packs, one Stone, to settle what the Accord has left unsettled."
