Chapter 14: The Offer

Rowan's POV

My hand still hurt the next morning.

It was a flat red mark across the palm, and it throbbed whenever I closed my fingers on the reins.

I did not mind it.

I rode out at dawn with six wolves to the white-haired Alpha's tent on the eastern road.

The third Alpha, a broad woman from the south, had pitched hers beside it.

Three Alphas had seen the sky light over Redfern, and three of us were still here.

"Tell it plainly," the woman said. She did not offer me a seat.

I told it plainly.

The poison, the cellar, the cup, the burned hands. The letter. The one bright line in the Goddess's sight, from Cora to Gareth, and none to the dead brother.

When I finished, the old man leaned on his cane and shut his eyes.

"A man who locks up his own child," he said, "and feeds her sister the Luna's seat."

"Yes."

"Pack law lets three of us remove an Alpha for less."

"It needs the Luna's charge," the woman said.

"She has made it," I said. "In front of three hundred wolves."

"Then we will hear it," the old man said. "At the next full moon."

"That's seven days."

"It's the law, Breckenridge. We can't hurry it for you."

I bowed my head, because there was nothing to say.

Before I had mounted, a rider came up the road at a gallop with a white cloth tied to his spear.

He wore the black armband of the Redfern guard.

He would not look at any of us for longer than a breath.

"I carry a letter from the Alpha of Redfern," he said. "For Alpha Breckenridge alone."
