Chapter 15: Nan's Notebook

They let Kari see me on Saturday, through glass, for fifteen minutes.

She sat down on the other side with her coat zipped to her chin and her eyes swollen.

She picked up the phone on her side. I picked up mine.

"Dad doesn't know I'm here," she said. "He thinks I'm at the hospital with Mom."

"How is she?"

"She's awake. She hasn't said your name."

I nodded.

"The evidence bag with the badge," I said. "Did anyone say where it went?"

"The clerk says it was never logged. Dad called twice." Kari shook her head. "Nobody will say it existed. Without the badge it's your word against the district attorney's."

"Then I need something that isn't a badge."

"That's why I went to the Keane house last night," Kari said.

"Kari."

"The key was under the pot. You'd put it back. I knew you'd put it back."

She was talking too fast.

"I didn't go for you. I want that clear. I went because I watched you on the stage and I wanted to know what was wrong with the kitchen."

"What did you find?"

"Nothing in the kitchen. The plate was gone. Somebody had cleaned the table." She looked down. "So I looked where Nan Keane kept her flour."

She reached under her chair and lifted something to the glass.

It was a small black notebook with a cloth spine, the corners rubbed soft.

"It was behind the bin in the pantry," she said. "Taped underneath the bottom shelf. I think Maeve never found it."

"I can't take it in here."

"I know. I'll read it to you."
