Chapter 31: Planning the Planner
"Mags," Wells said, still on his knees. "You promised you'd wait in the van."
"I was in the van! For an hour! I got cold!"
"So you hid in the curtains."
"I didn't hide. I supervised." She wiped her face with both coat sleeves. "She said yes. Did she say yes? I heard yes."
"She said obviously yes," I said.
Maggie screamed again and ran at us across the carpet.
She knocked us both over.
The three of us lay on the ballroom floor under the one bright chandelier, laughing, with Maggie's elbow in my ribs.
"I'm calling the kids," she said. "I'm calling everybody. I'm calling the fish man."
"Don't call the fish man."
"I'm calling the fish man."
She called the fish man.
In January, I made one rule.
I made it at Maggie's kitchen table, in front of witnesses.
"I'm planning this wedding," I said. "Not you."
Wells looked at me over his coffee.
"I'm a wedding planner."
"That's why."
"I've planned four hundred and twelve weddings."
"Then you know how. You can sit back and enjoy it."
"I don't know how to sit back and enjoy anything," he said. "That's the whole point of me."
