Chapter 8: Tasting
Wells called her back that afternoon.
He didn't say "cancellation." He said, "We can fit you in," in a voice like a closing door.
Larissa's new check cleared on Tuesday.
On Wednesday the landlord downstairs got fourteen thousand dollars and a handshake. I watched from the laundromat window while I pretended to fold my aprons.
On Friday I walked into the bank on Girard and paid off my loan. All nineteen thousand four hundred.
The teller asked if I wanted a receipt.
"Two," I said. "I'm framing one."
I hung it over the register at the shop, next to my first dollar.
The tasting was on Tuesday, June 2, at Maggie's kitchen.
It was the back half of the Bradshaw building, with steel counters, three ovens and an empty playpen in the corner.
Maggie's youngest had drawn a horse on the fridge door in dry-erase marker. Nobody was allowed to wipe it off.
I set up my sample boards at one end of the table.
Blush garden roses. White ranunculus. Trailing jasmine. Peonies, because I knew she'd ask.
Maggie lined up six little plates.
"Are you okay?" she whispered.
"I'm great."
"You're holding that rose so tight it's bleeding."
I looked down. I'd snapped the stem in half.
At ten on the dot, they came in.
Larissa first, in a pale yellow sundress, her ring flashing in every light in the room.
Kellan behind her, carrying her bag.
He looked thinner. He looked at me, then at the floor, then at me again.
Wells stood at the head of the table with his clipboard.
"Sit," he said. "We'll start with the crab cakes."
"Oh, I don't want crab cakes," Larissa said. "Bren had crab cakes."
