Chapter 2: Ten Feet

Maddie gets a glass of water and talks while Anders is on his knees in the dark.

Anders moved before the hall light finished spreading.

He slid his finger out and caught the towel off the floor.

Then he dropped to a crouch in the shadow at the end of the island, where the counter hid him from the doorway.

Teddy yanked the towel around his hips with one shaking hand and grabbed the fridge door with the other.

The refrigerator light fell across his chest, and he knew exactly what his face looked like in it.

Maddie shuffled in with her bun sliding sideways and her round glasses crooked on her nose.

She wore the Gophers shirt that came to her knees.

"Teddy," she said, in a voice full of sleep. "Why are you naked in the fridge?"

"I'm in a towel."

"It's two in the morning."

"I just got out of the shower. I was hungry." His voice came out almost normal, and he was proud of it. "Go back to bed, Mads."

"I heard a noise."

"That was me. I stubbed my toe."

She climbed onto a stool at the island, put her elbows on the counter, and yawned until her jaw cracked.

Anders was crouched four feet from her knees.

Teddy could see the top of his silver-blond head in the dark, and the line of one wide shoulder under the coat.

"You're all flushed," Maddie said.

"Hot water," Teddy said.

"You get like that when you're lying."

"I get like that when I'm in a towel at two in the morning."

She squinted at him over the glasses.

"Is it the bartending thing? Did that guy from the pub text you again?"

"No guy."

"I have orgo at nine," she said. "I can't sleep. Come sit with me."

Under the lip of the counter, a hand closed around Teddy's ankle.

It slid up the back of his calf, slow and warm, and every hair on his leg stood up.

"I can't," Teddy said. "I'm starving. I'm going to eat standing up."

"Fine. I'll stay here."

She started talking, because Maddie always started talking.

Something about the Krebs cycle and a girl in her lab who stole her pipettes.

Teddy nodded, and said "Yeah" and "Really?" in the right places, and felt the hand reach the back of his knee.

Then it reached his thigh, and the towel was drawn to one side.

A mouth closed around the head of his cock.

Teddy's whole spine locked.

He gripped the cold edge of the fridge door until the plastic creaked, and Maddie looked up.

"You okay?"

"Cramp," he said. "In my leg."

"Do you want me to look?"

"No. Tell me about the pipettes."

She told him about the pipettes.

Down below the counter, hot and slick and not hurried at all, Anders took him deeper.

He did it with his hand wrapped around the base and his lips sealed around the rest.

The tongue pressed flat against the underside, slid up, and swirled.

Maddie had sucked him off, and Zack, and once a guy from his hall.

None of them had ever taken this much time.

Anders's throat opened around him, tight, hot, and wet, and then closed.

Teddy bit his lip so hard he tasted copper.

"Teddy."

"Yeah," Teddy said.

"You're making a weird face," Maddie said.

"I'm thinking about the Krebs cycle."

"That's so cute," she said, and rested her head on her arm. "You listen to me. Zack never listened to me."

Hearing the name in this dark kitchen hit Teddy in the chest, and Anders's mouth did not so much as pause.

His hand slid up between Teddy's thighs.

A finger went back where it had been, stretching him, curling, finding the same sweet spot in two thrusts.

Teddy's vision sparked white at the edges.

He was going to come.

He was going to come in a stranger's mouth, with his friend resting her chin four feet away.

The worst part was that he didn't want to stop it.

He stared at the ceiling and said her name.

"Mads."

"Mm?" she said.

"Go to bed."

"Are you sure?" she asked.

"I'm sure. I'm going to eat and go to bed. I love you."

"You're so weird." She yawned again and slid off the stool. "Love you too. Don't leave the milk out."

She padded across the kitchen and past him, close enough that her sleeve brushed his arm.

Teddy stared straight ahead.

She turned the corner into the hall, and her door shut.

The fan started up again.

Teddy came the instant the latch clicked.

He folded forward over the counter with his fist crammed in his mouth, and his whole body emptied down Anders's throat in long jerks.

Anders swallowed every drop.

He kept his hands on Teddy's hips until the last of it was gone.

Then he stood up and wiped his mouth with his thumb.

His face was as composed as it had been in the bar.

Only his eyes had changed.

"You lied beautifully," he said.

"She's my friend."

"She'll stay out of it. I understand." Anders buttoned the top of his coat. "Thursday at nine. A car will come to the curb."

"I haven't agreed to Thursday."

"You agreed in the middle of the Krebs cycle."

Teddy laughed, a cracked and breathless sound.

Anders set a thin black card on the counter, next to the salt.

Holmgren Mills, it said, and a phone number, and nothing else.

"You'll want to check your email now," he said.

Then he walked through the dark kitchen and out the front door without a sound.

Teddy found his phone on the stove.

The email from the bursar was two lines long.

Balance: $0.00.

His eyes burned, which was ridiculous.

He stood in the kitchen with his legs still shaking, and typed a text to the number on the card.

Thank you for the evening.

It went out blue and sat there.

The little word under it said Delivered, and nothing came back.
