On Sunday Dot fixed my door.
She did it at eight in the morning, with a drill, singing, to make sure the whole building knew.
When it hung straight on its new hinges she wiped her hands on her apron and looked at the two of us.
Margot sat at the kitchen island in my sweater with a mug of tea.
I stood by the window with my arms crossed.
Neither of us had slept much.
"I'll be downstairs," Dot said. "With a pan. Listen for noise."
She left and shut the door gently behind her.
Margot put down the mug.
"The interim board called at six," she said. "Four of the seven."
"What did they say?"
"They want me gone and they want you in."
"In what?"
"Chair. Chief executive. Anything you'll take."
I laughed once.
"Two weeks ago I was a freelancer with a crate and a grudge."
"Now they'd hand me the building."
"They'd hand you the building because it's yours."
"Don't."
"It is, Wynn. I made a list on the way back from the diner."
"The penthouse. The savings. The name on the building, which should have been yours from the start."
