Chapter 8: The Brother

"Stay behind me," Leandro said, and opened the green door.

Gaetano filled the doorway of the stoop in a camel coat, with a man on each side of him.

He looked past Leandro to find me in the hall. "There you are. You have some nerve, Mirella."

"Good morning, Gaetano."

"Don't give me good morning. You sent my firm's name to four hundred people."

"I sent the truth to four hundred people."

His face went dark red.

"Father is sitting at home with a doctor because of you. Mother hasn't stopped crying. Adriano's father wants a meeting, and Fiorella can't get out of bed."

He pushed a folded paper at Leandro's chest.

"Sign the guarantee, take your little video down, and come home. We'll tell everyone you were upset."

Leandro looked at the paper and did not take it.

The man on Gaetano's left stepped closer, and then he stopped.

He looked at Leandro's face for a moment.

"Bruni," he said quietly. "You're Don Ugo's boy."

"I'm working," Leandro said.

The man took his hand out of his jacket and stepped back off the stoop without another word.

Gaetano turned his head. "What are you doing? Take him."

"I'm not touching that one," the man said.

I came forward beside Leandro, close enough that my sleeve brushed his arm.
