Chapter 19: The Choice

He stopped in front of the head table.

My sister had gone white.

She started to stand, with her hand on the cloth, and he said, "Don't get up," and she sat.

For a moment he only looked at her.

I stood in the middle of the floor and watched the back of my husband's head.

I felt my heart working in my chest.

"Lidia," he said. "Welcome home."

"Vasco."

"You're about six months."

"Yes," she said.

"And you're tired, and you're frightened, and you have nowhere to go."

She put her hand over her mouth.

"Then here's what I can do," Vasco said, and his voice was clear and level and reached every wall. "My mother's cottage on Clark's Point stands empty. It's two bedrooms, with a nursery. It's yours for as long as you and the child need it, in your name, with the heat paid and the taxes paid."

A gasp ran through the hall.

He drew an envelope from his jacket and laid it on the cloth in front of her.

"That's a trust. For your daughter. It's hers. It doesn't depend on anything you do, or say, or tell this room. I'd have done it for any child born in this town to a woman with no one."
