Chapter 18: The Anniversary

The club hall on Union Street held two hundred and ten people on the fourteenth of June.

I took it all in from the door.

White tablecloths, a head table on a low stage, red geraniums in clay pots.

Over everything three chandeliers that had been bought in the fifties and never once dimmed.

A band of five old men played in the corner, in white jackets.

It was my anniversary.

I had a navy dress with a high neck, Avó's emerald on my left hand.

The plain gold band beside it, and every person in the room was looking at the door behind me.

Because Lidia was coming through it.

She had arrived on my father's arm.

She wore cream silk, loose and long, cut to the floor to show the swell of her stomach without apology.

She walked slowly with her chin up and her hair swinging at her jaw.

Two hundred people stopped talking.

I watched Avó's table.

Avó had risen.

She was standing at the head of it in her black wool, with her cane planted.

When my sister reached her, she put out both old hands and took her by the shoulders.

"Child," she said.

"Avó."

"You are very tired. Sit."

She sat my sister at her right hand.
