Chapter 17: The Sisters

My sister was thinner than I remembered.

That was the first thing.

She stood on the porch on Brock Avenue with a suitcase in one hand and the other spread on her belly.

Her hair, which used to hang to her waist in one dark shining sheet, was cut at her chin.

She was twenty-nine now.

She looked forty in the light.

"Nes," she said.

I had planned a hundred speeches.

I had practiced them in the shower and on the dock and in the dark next to my husband.

I said none of them.

I put my arms around her, and she put her face in my neck and began to cry.

I felt the round hard curve of her stomach against mine.

"Come in," I said. "Come in, Lidia. Come in."

My mother was already in the kitchen doorway, with her hand pressed to her mouth.

We sat at the table.

My mother made tea nobody drank, and Lidia pulled out a chair and lowered herself into it with a hand on the small of her back.

I watched my sister's face.

She was still beautiful.

It had gone thinner and sharper and tired.

But the green eyes were the same, and the mouth, and the chin she lifted when she apologized.

"I'm six months," she said. "It's a girl."
