Chapter 16: What Avó Wants

Vasco's POV

On the twelfth of June, I came home from the dock at noon and found my grandmother's sitting room door shut.

She never shut it.

She kept it open all day so she could hear the house, the stairs, the stove, the radio in the kitchen, and the phone.

I knocked.

"Come."

She was in the blue chair by the window with her cane across her knees and a plate of untouched toast.

Across from her, on the sofa, sat Armando Teixeira with his hat in his hands.

I stopped in the doorway.

"Avó."

"Close the door, Vasco."

"What is he doing in this house?" I said.

"Visiting an old woman who invited him." She did not look at the toast. "Sit."

"I'll stand."

"Then stand. But you will hear this."

Armando cleared his throat.

He looked smaller than he had at Christmas, grayer, and the charm had gone out of his shoulders.

"Vasco," he said. "There's something you need to know before the fourteenth. Lidia called me in April. She's coming home, as I wrote. But she isn't coming alone."

"With the man in the Honda."

"No. He's gone. He left her in March." He turned the hat in his hands. "She's pregnant, son. Six months. She was too ashamed to say it in a letter."
