Chapter 15: Nothing Is a Clause

I walked home along the water with the letter in my fist.

It was dark by six in February.

The wind off the harbor cut straight through my coat.

My hands were cold, and I knew by the second block that I was not going to hand it to him in the kitchen.

I was going to hand it to him at the door.

He was home.

His car was in the drive, and the hall light was on.

He came out of the study when I shut the front door, still in his work shirt, with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

He saw my face.

"What happened?"

"My father came to the floor."

"I heard. The guard called me, and the pilot called me, and half the fleet called me." He crossed the hall. "I'd have been there in two minutes."

"I know."

"Are you hurt?"

"No," I said.

I held out the letter.

He took it, and he looked at the postmark, and at the round handwriting on the outside of the envelope, and his face didn't change.

"From Lidia."

"Yes."

"Read it to me or I'll read it," he said.

"Read it. I don't care." I pulled my coat open. "After."

"Ines."

"After." I stepped toward him. "Nothing in this house tonight is a clause."

He looked at me.

Then he dropped the letter on the hall table without looking and put both hands on my face.
