Chapter 14: The Drawer

Timothy's POV

My mother had never been early to anything in her life, and on Saturday she was late to her own study.

The housekeeper let me in at ten and said the florist had pulled Mrs. Hargrove out to the garden.

"She says the list is in the right-hand file drawer, sir. The third folder."

I sat in the leather chair where I had been sent as a boy to think about what I had done.

The room hadn't changed. Dark wood, my father's portrait, the long desk with nothing on it but a blotter and a pen.

I gave her five minutes, then I stood and opened the drawer.

It ran heavy on its rails.

The third folder was labeled GUEST LIST, SPRING. The one in front of it was thicker, and when I lifted the list the two came up together and the thick one fell open across my arm.

M.R., it said on the tab, in my mother's square hand.

The first thing out was a photograph.

A small boy in a yellow raincoat stood on a hospital walkway, holding a gray rabbit by the ear. He looked about one.

The picture had been taken from across a street.

The second one showed the same boy at two, on a woman's hip outside a rented apartment door.

The woman was Rosemary.

I did not move for a while.

Under the photographs lay an invoice on the letterhead of a private investigator.
