Chapter 4: On the Steps

I sat down on the step beside the oranges.

Calvin sat too, a careful foot of cold concrete between us.

"I'm going to tell you something," I said. "And you're going to hate me for it."

"I won't."

"You will. I'd hate me."

He waited. The streetlight showed me his face, and I found I could not look at it.

"Milo's father is Timothy," I said.

Calvin didn't say anything.

A car passed slowly with its radio on and turned the corner.

"Four years ago I spent one night with a man at a hotel," I said. "I didn't know his last name. I didn't know it until last night, when he walked into your mother's dining room."

"Timothy," Calvin said.

"Yes."

"My brother."

"I'm sorry."

He laughed once, a short breath through his nose.

"You don't have to tell me about the jaw, Rose. I've been looking at it across a table for ten months."

I turned and stared at him.

"You knew?"

"I didn't know." He pressed his knuckles to his mouth, then took them away. "I thought it was a coincidence. Or I decided to think so. It's the same."

His eyes were wet.

"Does he know?"

"The test came back yesterday. He's the father."

"And you went to his house tonight."

"Yes."

"To tell him about the doctor." His voice cracked. "To work out what he could give you."

"I asked him to marry me."

He stood so fast the oranges rolled off the step.
